Today is a very special day. It marks four years since my grandpa passed away and also I’ve been getting some pretty amazing signs from my Ita who passed away almost two months ago.

The day after my Ita’s funeral in June, we flew back to Guatemala. We only took our backpacks with us so we didn’t have any checked luggage, but we ended up flying with a friend who volunteers at our school with us. He had checked luggage, so while Edwin and Roberto went to go pick up his bags from the carousel, I decided to wait. When I set my backpack down, I noticed a penny laying right where I set my bag, and a few days before that I saw a post on Facebook from my mom that read, “When an angel misses you, they toss a penny down. Sometimes to cheer you up, to make a smile out of your frown. So don’t pass by that penny when you’re feeling blue… It may be a penny from heaven that an angel tossed to you.”

As soon as I saw that penny, I knew it was my newest guardian angel, my Ita.
About a month after her passing, Edwin and I were driving home from work and I saw a St. Jude sticker on the back of a car. My Ita loved St. Jude and always asked for his prayers. I pointed it out to Edwin and I said, “Hey! There’s my Ita saying hello!” Then Edwin said, “Hey, I think Ita just tried to say hello to us ’cause 10 minutes ago I saw a different car with a sticker of St. Jude, but I didn’t put two and two together. Ita probably thought, ‘Edwin didn’t understand my sign, so I’ll just go back to send the same sign to Darlene ’cause she’s definitely gonna know it’s me!'” After he told me that we laughed and knew that my grandparents were up there laughing along with us.
And the most recent, and craziest thing that happened was yesterday. While my students were cleaning up at school, I told them not to go into the dance room anymore because it was already cleaned. So of course, when I found five of my students laying around and playing in the dance room, I got upset with them. I told them to pick up “all the trash” they had left on the floor and go back to the classroom. I quote “all the trash” because in reality I was being a little bit dramatic. There was literally one tiny piece of scrap paper on the floor that I wanted them to pick up and put in the trash. No one obeyed me and I ended up picking up that piece of paper. When I saw what the paper said on it, I was in awe. Why? You wonder. Because on that tiny (and mean really tiny) piece of paper, that looked like it was cut out from a magazine, read Casanova. It was cut perfectly around the name and it randomly appeared after my students had already cleaned. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it, but I was so ecstatic and the happiest person the rest of the day. For those of you that don’t know, Casanova is my grandparents’ last name. Leonard and Elise Casanova.

They are watching over us always. But it’s so amazing to have little signs like this to give us all the lift and motivation to keep on moving throughout our days.
It’s never easy to lose someone, but when you have the faith in knowing that they are in a better place, it makes it all the easier. Especially when they let us know that they are okay 🙂
